Freight market weakness and capacity issues in logistics services
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index for September indicated a decline of 0.9% from August, signaling softness in freight volumes within the supply chain solutions sector.
According to U.S. Bank’s Freight Payment Index, the truck-freight market contracted 2.9% in Q3 2025. Despite fewer shipments, shippers are paying more, which suggests that exits from capacity are tightening supply and impacting transportation warehousing strategies.
Trailer orders remain weak; one report shows orders in August significantly down compared to the 10-year averages, with cancellations still elevated.
Takeaway: Many carriers face headwinds; weaker demand, volatile volumes, and shrinking capacity may push rates up (if supply tightens), but profit remains elusive.
Industry distress and bankruptcies
Over 30 trucking companies have filed for Chapter 11 since the beginning of Q2 this year.
According to a recent report from the insurance industry, many carriers are scaling back or shutting down due to thin profit margins, high insurance costs, and debt.
A growing concern is that the driver pool may shrink due to stricter licensing requirements (e.g., English proficiency, non-domicile rules), which could further stress logistics services and the overall supply chain solutions in the industry.
